Counting Gangs: Is the Government playing ‘fast and loose’ with gang numbers?
The article examines the controversy surrounding the New Zealand government's use of gang membership statistics, with opposition figures like Mitchell and Luxon criticizing the Labour government's handling of the data. Experts like Jarrod Gilbert argue that the gang list is not a reliable measure of gang numbers due to its frequent 'sanitization' and inherent inaccuracies. The police maintain that the list is an intelligence tool rather than a statistical one. The government claims a reduction in crime, but critics argue that the manipulation of statistics undermines these claims.
Richard Chambers to be announced as new police commissioner, RNZ understands
Richard Chambers is set to be announced as the new police commissioner, succeeding in a competitive selection process against Deputy Commissioner Jevon McSkimming. The appointment, recommended by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and advised by Mitchell, aligns with the coalition parties' law and order campaign promises. Chambers, currently Assistant Commissioner and previously seconded to Interpol, is expected to bring strong leadership to address challenges in law enforcement, particularly in tackling gang and organized crime. The decision reflects a shift from the previous 'policing-by-consent' approach, emphasizing a more traditional policing model.
Treaty Principles Bill haka highlights tensions between Māori tikanga and rules of Parliament
The article discusses the tensions between Māori cultural practices, specifically the haka, and the rules of New Zealand's Parliament. The performance of the Ngāti Toa haka 'Ka mate, Ka mate' in Parliament by Te Pāti Māori members highlighted the clash between Māori tikanga and parliamentary conventions. Helmut Modlik, Ngāti Toa's chief executive, defended the haka as a cultural expression, while David Seymour criticized its use in Parliament, calling for stricter adherence to parliamentary rules. Former Speaker Sir Lockwood Smith emphasized the importance of maintaining order and decorum in the House, while acknowledging the need to respect Māori customs. The incident underscores the ongoing debate over cultural expression and legislative procedures in New Zealand.
Labour claims ‘cover-up’ as weekly reporting on benefit numbers cancelled

Social Development Minister Louise Upston argues that monthly and quarterly reports provide more meaningful data, while Labour's Carmel Sepuloni contends that the change obscures rising unemployment figures. The government is also pursuing a welfare system overhaul with stricter requirements for beneficiaries.
Christopher Luxon Gives Scathing Appraisal Of Treaty Principles Bill Ahead Of First Reading
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon criticized the Treaty Principles Bill during a media conference, expressing concerns about its impact on New Zealand's progress. Luxon emphasized the importance of addressing pressing issues like the cost of living and crime. ACT's David Seymour defended the bill, arguing it does not distract the government from its goals and is essential for addressing societal issues. The Green Party suggested treating the bill as a conscience issue, but Luxon dismissed the idea.

Ngāti Toa's Helmut Modlik defended the haka's relevance, while Speaker Gerry Brownlee enforced parliamentary decorum. The Auditor-General of New Zealand, John Ryan, has initiated an inquiry into how ministers managed conflicts of interest in fast-tracked projects under the Fast-track Approvals bill. The inquiry will assess the adequacy of systems and processes in place to identify and manage conflicts, aiming to maintain public trust and uphold New Zealand's reputation for transparency. The investigation will not evaluate policy decisions or the merits of individual projects. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed confidence in the management of conflicts, while critics argue the fast-track process undermines democracy. The ministry has apologized, acknowledging the oversight, while Labour and NZ First engage in a political tussle over the issue.
