Climate financing is lacking to meet the global balance
The article highlights the challenges in securing climate financing to meet the goals of the Global Stocktake, a key component of the Paris Agreement. Experts emphasize the importance of financial support for implementing climate objectives, especially for low-income countries. The upcoming COP29 in Azerbaijan is expected to address these financial gaps, but geopolitical tensions and the slow pace of adaptation efforts pose significant hurdles. The article underscores the need for clear adaptation goals and the urgency of implementing early warning systems to mitigate climate risks.
Global Aid Funds Face Fundraising ‘Traffic Jam’
Major global development funds, including The World Bank's International Development Association, Gavi, and The Global Fund, face significant challenges in securing $100 billion in grants due to aid budget cuts by key donors like the UK, Germany, and France. The Center for Global Development warns of a 'replenishment traffic jam' as these funds compete for limited resources amid economic headwinds. Aid budget reductions threaten the stability of essential services in the world's poorest countries. However, countries like Denmark and South Korea are increasing their contributions, offering a glimmer of hope for future funding.

The Center for Global Development highlights a 'replenishment traffic jam' as multiple institutions seek funds from a limited pool. Despite these challenges, some countries like Denmark and South Korea are increasing their contributions, offering a glimmer of hope. The situation remains uncertain, with potential negative impacts on aid-dependent countries if funding falls short.
Climate Finance Missing To Deliver On Global Stocktake
The article discusses the challenges in implementing the recommendations from the Global Stocktake, a major assessment of global climate change progress. With the upcoming COP29 summit in Azerbaijan, climate finance is highlighted as a crucial factor for achieving climate goals. Experts express concerns over the lack of available financing, particularly for low-income countries, and the slow progress in adaptation efforts. The article emphasizes the need for concrete financial commitments from wealthy nations and highlights the fragmented state of climate adaptation plans globally. Despite the challenges, there is optimism about commitments to early warning systems for extreme weather events.
Drug firms must prioritise underserved patients
Pharmaceutical companies are urged to prioritize reaching underserved patients in low- and middle-income countries with essential medicines like insulin. The Access to Medicine Foundation highlights the need for clear, measurable goals and effective strategies to ensure equitable access to healthcare. While some companies have strategies in place, many lack comprehensive approaches, particularly in addressing non-communicable diseases such as cancer and diabetes. The report calls for improved data collection and patient adherence measures to bridge the gap between production efforts and actual healthcare needs.

The article discusses the urgent need for sustainable diagnostic tests in light of the global plastic pollution crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic's waste impact. Companies like Okos Diagnostics and Abingdon Health are developing biodegradable and plant-based test kits, with Okos launching a fully biodegradable COVID-19 test kit. The article highlights the challenges faced by low- and middle-income countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, where plastic pollution is severe and local production of diagnostics is limited. Experts emphasize the need for investment and regulatory support to promote sustainable diagnostics globally. Money Does Not Bring Happiness to Cortina d’Ampezzo
Cortina d’Ampezzo, a renowned ski resort in the Dolomites, faces socio-economic challenges as it prepares to co-host the 2026 Winter Olympics. While the event is seen as a boost for regional development and tourism, local residents struggle with high living costs and inadequate basic services. The reconstruction of a historic bobsled track, despite local opposition and high costs, exemplifies the tension between attracting capital and addressing community needs. The article highlights the broader issue of tourism-driven economic disparity in alpine communities, emphasizing the need for balanced resource distribution and improved public services to prevent demographic decline.
The Olympics Transformed a Tiny Italian Village — But at a High Cost
Cortina d’Ampezzo, a small Italian mountain town, is set to co-host the 2026 Winter Olympics with Milan, 70 years after its first hosting in 1956. The event is seen by politicians as a means to boost the regional economy and reaffirm Cortina as a winter sports destination. However, the development has led to increased foreign capital and tourism for the wealthy, pricing out residents and complicating local life. The Olympics and other big events are believed to solve some issues, but the reality is more complex, with a lack of investment in basic services for residents, leading to emigration and population decline. The author explores the town's transformation, including the controversial rebuilding of a 1920s bobsled track, and reflects on the changing dynamics of housing affordability, the impact on local communities, and the debate between tourism development and the need for essential services.
Avatars and AI to tackle mental health
AI-powered digital avatars are being trialed in India and Ethiopia to assist individuals experiencing auditory hallucinations, as part of efforts to adapt mental health treatments for low-resource settings. The Avatar 2 trial, funded by Wellcome, demonstrated that avatars, with therapist support, can alleviate distress. However, the therapy's reliance on voice-changing software poses challenges in regions with limited therapists. Led by Tom Ward from King’s College London, the team plans to incorporate AI to simplify the therapy's use and adapt it culturally for Ethiopia and India. The initiative highlights the need for equitable mental health solutions and aims to extend the therapy's benefits globally.
