Meet Homo Naledi

20 Aug 2018  |  ewn.co.za
The article discusses the discovery of a new hominin species, Homo naledi, named after the Dinaledi Chamber where it was found in the Rising Star caves in South Africa. The Rising Star Expedition has extracted parts of 15 individuals and suggests there could be many more remains to be discovered. H. naledi is described as smaller and older than modern humans, with distinct physical features such as curved fingers and a small skull. The species also exhibits behaviors that were once thought to be uniquely human, such as the potential ritualistic placement of dead bodies in a remote cave chamber. This finding challenges previous notions about the evolution of such complex behaviors.

Off the beaten track in Italy’s oversubscribed Tuscany

06 Mar 2017  |  ewn.co.za
Journalist Camilla Bath explores the less-traveled region of Maremma in Tuscany, Italy, highlighting the town of Pitigliano, known as 'Little Jerusalem'. Despite its beauty and historical significance, Maremma remains largely untouched by the mass tourism that has affected other parts of Tuscany. Bath describes the town's medieval architecture, local cuisine featuring cinghiale (wild boar) and pici pasta, and the Jewish heritage evident in the synagogue and traditional sfratti cookies. She also touches on the natural beauty of the region, from the vie cave, ancient Etruscan pathways, to the Etruscan Necropolis near Sovana. The article suggests that while the Maremma needs tourism for economic survival, there is a delicate balance between attracting visitors and preserving the region's authenticity. Bath advises that a car is necessary to explore the area due to limited public transport.
