Improved pulmonary function is associated with reduced inflammation after hybrid whole-body exercise training in persons with spinal cord injury

04 Apr 2024  |  physoc.onlinelibrary.wiley.com
A study examining the effects of 12 weeks of Functional Electrical Stimulation Rowing Training (FESRT) on systemic inflammation and pulmonary function in individuals with sub-acute spinal cord injury (SCI) found that FESRT led to clinically significant improvements in pulmonary function and a reduction in pro-inflammatory biomarkers. The study suggests that improvements in pulmonary function are associated with reductions in systemic inflammation, indicating a potential benefit of FESRT in managing respiratory disease risk factors in persons with SCI.

Effect of hybrid FES exercise on body composition during the sub-acute phase of spinal cord injury

04 Apr 2024  |  journals.plos.org
The study investigates the impact of high-intensity functional electrical stimulation row training (FESRT) on body composition in individuals during the sub-acute phase (24 months) after a spinal cord injury (SCI). It compares the effects of FESRT with standard care, which includes arms-only exercise or no exercise. The results show that FESRT significantly increases exercise capacity and lean mass, particularly in the legs, and tends to reduce total body fat percentage. It also attenuates bone mineral density (BMD) loss, especially in the pelvis, but does not significantly affect serum lipids and insulin sensitivity indices. The study suggests that early intervention with FESRT may be effective in mitigating negative body composition changes after SCI.

Effectiveness of a Single Prolonged Aerobic Exercise Session on Executive Function Task Performance in Physically Active Adults (21–70 Years of Age)

04 Feb 2023  |  MDPI
The study investigates the impact of a single prolonged aerobic exercise session on executive function in physically active adults aged 21-70. Participants, who were self-registered cyclists, showed improved performance in the Trail Making Test (TMT) immediately after completing a 161-km cycling event. The improvement was not influenced by age but was associated with pre-exercise cognitive performance. The findings suggest that a single prolonged exercise session can enhance executive function, supporting the therapeutic benefits of aerobic exercise on cognitive function in adults.
