Maintaining traditions in Salasaca of Ecuador’s Andes
In Salasaca district of Tungurahua province, Ecuador, the strong identity, culture, and customs of its inhabitants are preserved. The Salasacas, who are of Inca ancestry, speak both Spanish and Quechua. Traditional clothing, festive rituals, and handicrafts such as yarn spinning and tapestry weaving on archaic looms are part of their daily life. Sisters Martina and Luz Maria Masaquiza Sailema exemplify the traditional roles of women in Salasaca, as they gather kikuyo grass for their animals, a task designated for women in their community.
Dripping Gold: On the Hunt for Honey in Kenya
Agnes Cheptepkeny, a resident of Marigat in Kenya's Baringo County, uses honey as a form of savings and income. Despite Kenya not being widely known for honey production compared to Ethiopia and Tanzania, local beekeeping thrives due to the favorable natural landscape. However, challenges such as lack of business knowledge, diminishing interest from younger generations, parasites, pesticides, climate change, and underdeveloped infrastructure hinder the growth and export potential of the honey industry.
People of the Ocean and Seaweed Gatherers Captured in Berta Tilmantaitė's Photos
Berta Tilmantaitė, a freelance photographer and journalist, captures the lives of oceanic communities and seaweed gatherers in her award-winning work. Her photo reports from Malaysia and Peru highlight the traditional lifestyles and challenges faced by the Bajau Laut, a nomadic sea tribe, and the seaweed gatherers of Pacasmayo. The Bajau Laut, known for their exceptional free-diving skills, struggle with modern challenges such as declining fish populations and piracy. In Peru, seaweed gatherers rely on the ocean for sustenance and income, despite harsh working conditions. Tilmantaitė's work emphasizes the deep connection between these communities and their natural environments.
Anti-government protests in Kiev. After two months of primarily peaceful anti-government protests in the city centre, new laws that meant to end the protest movement have sparked violent clashes in recent days. Deadly violence erupted on both sides. Maidan - is a round square in the centre of Ukraine's capital Kiev where the revolution was born and is still growing. You can choose any angle to observe processes there. Guilty brutal militia beating peaceful Ukrainians, or in contrary - provocative protesters throwing "molotovs" at their contemporary guys in uniforms. Seek for freedom, economic wealth and ability to choose are the core principles. Burning barricades, a black-faced protestant, woman offering pancakes with strawberry confiture on a side, freedom songs, warm jacket given by a stranger and a smiling "Berkut" guy beyond his metal shield. That looks extraordinary. Meaning of the meaningless fight could be found in between these lines. Filmed and Photographed by Artūras Moro
A short visual and musical journey through wonderful Myanmar (Burma).
This is a short story about Oleg Timofejevich Odnolko, who spends a lot of time in Taiga (Evenkia region, central Russia) woods to hunt there. Hunting in the remote Taiga has become less profitable and much more difficult than it was some time ago. But all hard challenges that make others to step away do not scare him. Oleg is absolutely dependent on the nature and it seems that he even became a part of it – he is not an intruder, he belongs here, and he is not going to change his way of living as this is his home, his work, his wilderness.
