The article explores the profound impact of human-animal relationships, particularly focusing on the welfare of pets during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. It highlights the emotional bonds between humans and pets, the importance of understanding and catering to the unique needs of different animals, and the potential negative effects of urban environments on pet well-being. The text emphasizes the need for responsible pet ownership, considering the specific requirements and mental health of pets, and provides guidelines for prospective pet owners to ensure they are prepared for the responsibilities involved.
Agricultural sector misuses war in Ukraine to block livestock reduction
The main European agricultural association and lobby group Copa-Cogeca is accused of exploiting the war in Ukraine to push for increased livestock feed production. This move is seen as an attempt to delay the European farm-to-fork strategy, which aims to make the food system more environmentally friendly. The Boerenbond has joined this effort, not to reduce livestock numbers, but to put the strategy on hold.
How did the fairy tale of the 'model wolf' degenerate so quickly into a nightmare? "It is a power game that becomes visible through the media," says Professor Baldwin Van Gorp (Institute for Media Studies).
It was measurably quieter during the shutdown. Belgium and Flanders have been promoting quiet zones and shelters for years, and they are becoming increasingly popular. Although 'natural' silence remains a utopia in densely populated Belgium...
At the start of the new government, the Flemish minister for animal welfare promised to make livestock stables safer, especially with regard to the prevention of stable fires. A measure with no real result.
White list of dog traders does not help against fraudulent practices
The Dutch government is considering implementing a 'white list' of bona fide dog traders to combat the sale of illegally imported puppies, similar to a system in Belgium. However, the effectiveness of Belgium's white list is questioned, as it has not stopped the trade of young, sick, and poorly socialized puppies from Eastern Europe. Despite strict regulations, enforcement is lacking due to understaffed authorities. The article highlights the health and behavioral issues of puppies imported under these conditions and suggests that without proper enforcement, such regulations are ineffective.
The Criminal Practices of Puppy Trade
Eastern European countries specialize in dog breeding, flooding Belgium with puppies from Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Hungary of substandard quality. Malicious breeders produce mentally and physically sick puppies in appalling conditions, often using forged passports to sell them to unsuspecting consumers through Belgian pet shops and dealers. Despite the Belgian government's awareness, ineffective legislation and lax controls facilitate this criminal activity. Online sales through advertising platforms and social media further enable the expansion of this trade. Apache has consulted with veterinarians, lawyers, specialists, and authorities, and contacted 300 individuals who purchased a puppy from Slovakia in 2016 to investigate the health and validity of the animals' passports. A five-part series reporting on these criminal practices begins today, advising caution when considering purchasing a puppy, especially during the upcoming holiday season.
