Magistrate Releases Residents Who Protested at Police Camp
The Kezi Magistrate's Court dismissed charges against twenty-six residents who had protested at the Maphisa police camp last year after their homes were demolished and land taken. Magistrate Jimmy Ntonga found no conclusive evidence of illegal protesting. The residents, including Senator Sithembile Mlotshwa and others, had carried placards with messages about their suffering and land rights. The police had accused the protesters of causing unrest and sowing discord between Shona and Ndebele communities. Despite the case dismissal, resident Elvis Ncube expressed disappointment, stating that life has not improved and they seek compensation for their destroyed property. The residents plan to take their case to a higher court for compensation from the government and the TREK company.
