Does it pay to treat employees well?: The case of informal finance

04 Apr 2024  |  onlinelibrary.wiley.com
The study examines the impact of employee-friendly workplace practices on a firm's access to trade credit, an important source of financing. It hypothesizes that good employee treatment can positively affect a firm's access to trade credit by developing a sustainable competitive advantage, nurturing innovation, signaling financial health, and building trust and reputation. The hypothesis is tested using a comprehensive dataset of publicly listed US firms and various empirical strategies to address potential endogeneity concerns. The findings support the hypothesis, showing that better employee treatment is associated with improved access to trade credit. The effect is more pronounced in competitive markets, for firms relying on customized goods or services, and in industries requiring skilled labor. The study contributes to the literature on trade credit determinants, the impacts of employee-friendly practices on firm outcomes, and the link between employee well-being and debt financing.

Inter-Reconfigurable Robot Path Planner for Double-Pass Complete Coverage Problem

19 Mar 2024  |  MDPI
Recent advancements in autonomous mobile robots have led to significant progress in area coverage tasks, but challenges remain in optimizing efficiency and computational complexity for multi-robot systems. This paper introduces an innovative approach using an autonomous inter-reconfigurable robot path planner to address the double-pass complete coverage problem. Leveraging a modified Glasius bio-inspired neural network, the proposed solution facilitates double-pass coverage through inter-reconfiguration between two robots, reducing algorithm iterations and computation time compared to traditional multi-robot path planning. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed solution in enhancing area coverage efficiency. The study also discusses implementation details, limitations, and future research directions in autonomous robotics.
