Machogu fires warning after principals attacked over poor grades
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has warned of police action against parents or communities attacking school principals over poor exam results. This follows incidents in Uasin Gishu and Kakamega counties where principals were assaulted by parents. Machogu emphasized that exam performance is a collective responsibility of all stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and students. He directed the Directorate of Quality Assurance to investigate poor performance cases and submit a report within a month. The Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association and Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa condemned the violence, urging legal means to address grievances.
How the 2024 school calendar will look like
The Ministry of Education has released the 2024 academic calendar for pre-primary, primary, secondary schools, and teachers training colleges in Kenya. Term one will run from January 8 to April 5, with a half-term break from February 29 to March 3. Term two will be from April 29 to August 2, with a half-term from June 20 to June 23. Term three will include key assessments and exams, with the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment and Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment from October 28 to October 31, and the KCSE examination from November 4 to November 22. The calendar also details the schedule for teachers training colleges.
1,216 KCSE candidates score a mean grade of A
A total of 1,216 candidates scored a mean grade of A in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, with 825 males and 391 females. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced that 201,133 candidates qualified for university entry, constituting 22.27% of the students. The new grading system, requiring only Mathematics and one language as mandatory subjects, aims to increase university and vocational training admissions. The Ministry of Education and KUCCPS are aligning entry requirements with this new system.

Form One placement to start Monday - CS Machogu
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced that the Form One placement exercise in Kenya will commence on Monday, November 27, and will last for two weeks. During the release of the 2023 KCPE results at Mtihani house, Machogu revealed that the top student scored 428 marks and only two candidates were involved in exam malpractices. A total of 8,523 candidates scored 400 marks and above, which is a decrease from the previous year's 9,443 candidates. Learners scoring between 300 and 399 marks represented 24.94% of the total candidates. There were 658,278 learners with scores between 200 and 299, 383,025 candidates between 100 and 199 marks, and 2,060 candidates with less than 100 marks. Machogu also mentioned that 9,354 candidates who missed the KCPE 2023 will have another opportunity to take the exam in January.
Top 2023 KCPE candidate scores 428 marks
The top candidate for the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) scored 428 marks out of 500. Education CS Ezekiel Machogu announced that 8,525 candidates scored above 400 marks, while 352,782 candidates scored between 300 to 399 marks. The exams attracted 1,406,557 candidates, and this cohort was the last to sit the KCPE exams as the ministry phases out the 8-4-4 curriculum. Results can be accessed through the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) website, SMS platforms, county education offices, and respective schools. KNEC CEO David Njeng'ere announced special exams for candidates who missed the KCPE.
KCPE results to be released on Thursday
The 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) results will be released on November 23, 2023, officiated by CS Ezekiel Machogu at the Kenya National Examinations Council’s new Mitihani House. This marks the last cohort to sit the KCPE exams as the 8-4-4 curriculum is being phased out. Over 1.4 million candidates took the exam, with minimal cases of cheating reported.
CS Machogu: No cheating occurred in 2023 KCPE exams
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced that no cheating occurred during the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams, except for six attempted cases. The exams, conducted between October 30 and November 1, were concluded successfully. Machogu highlighted the ministry's efforts to ensure credible results and mentioned that the KCPE results would be released by the end of next week, with Form One placements expected before Christmas. The ministry also took extra precautions to prevent malpractices in the ongoing KCSE exams.
