Tunisian Women Rally for Full Equality in Inheritance Rights

13 Mar 2018  |  www.al-monitor.com
On March 10, 2018, a significant rally organized by the Tunisian Alliance for Inheritance Equality, which includes over 70 civil associations defending women's rights, took place in front of the Tunisian Parliament. The demonstration aimed to pressure the Tunisian government and parliament to pass a law for gender equality in inheritance, under the slogan 'Equality is a right, not a favor.' The current Tunisian inheritance law, based on the Personal Status Code announced by former President Habib Bourguiba on August 13, 1956, and inspired by the Quran, particularly the 'Women' surah, allocates to a brother twice the inheritance share of his sister. President Beji Caid Essebsi had promised in a speech on August 13, 2017, during the celebration of Women's Day, to initiate a Personal Rights and Gender Equality Code and to review inheritance laws to achieve gender equality.

Seven Years After the Jasmine Revolution, Why Have Tunisia's Youth Taken to the Streets Again?

17 Jan 2018  |  www.vice.com
Seven years after the Jasmine Revolution in Tunisia, the youth have returned to the streets to protest against government-imposed tax increases and price hikes as part of the 2018 budget, following recommendations by the International Monetary Fund to reduce the current budget deficit. Despite Prime Minister Youssef Chahed's promises that 2018 would be the last 'difficult' year, many young Tunisians are unwilling to wait any longer, sparking the 'Fech Nestannew' (What are we waiting for?) campaign. The protests have pressured the government to take urgent measures for the needy and unemployed youth. Tunisian youth express that their demands since 2011 have not changed, seeking dignity, employment, and social justice. They criticize the government's patchwork policies and call for comprehensive economic and social reforms.
