DRC: The Discomfort of University Professors
A protocol agreement aimed at improving socio-professional conditions and revising the status of professors was signed between the government and the Association of Professors of the University of Kinshasa (Apukin) in the presence of Prime Minister Adolphe Muzito. The professors have been on strike since February 20, demanding a special status and a salary scale that was initially approved but later rejected by parliament. Despite the rejection, they believe the government can still apply the scale. Professors are seeking better social recognition and a salary of $2,100, which was promised since 2004. The budget has been confirmed to have sufficient funds by parliamentarians, and there is hope that the strike action will expedite a resolution.
