Feminists fill the streets of Madrid despite disagreements between collectives

08 Mar 2023  |  Voz de América
Thousands of feminists marched through central Madrid on International Women's Day, calling for an end to the patriarchy and gender-based violence, and advocating for equal pay and greater public policy participation. The first unrestricted demonstrations since the pandemic began highlighted divisions between major feminist collectives over the Trans Law and prostitution abolition. Two separate marches were held due to these disagreements. The Movimiento Feminista de Madrid criticized the government's sexual freedom law and demanded the resignation of Equality Minister Irene Montero. In contrast, the Comisión 8M de Madrid emphasized diverse feminist agendas. Latin American activists in Madrid also marched for visibility and rights for migrant women workers.

The 'Rejection Room': Complaints by Colombians Denied Entry in Mexico

10 Oct 2022  |  NTN24
Colombian travelers have raised alarms about the 'Rejection Room' at Mexico City's international airport, where foreigners, mainly Colombians, are detained daily under poor conditions on suspicion of attempting to migrate to the United States through Mexico. The room has beds and toilets with little ventilation, and detainees can spend hours to days without legal advice, leading to despair and uncertainty. Colombian YouTuber Pablo Rabelo shared his testimony of being detained, highlighting the moral, financial, psychological, and physical damage experienced. Social media complaints by travelers are increasing as detentions of Colombian migrants in Mexican border cities surge, with a 1,400% increase from 2021 to 2022, according to the National Institute of Migration. Pablo points to a harmful stereotype and stigmatization of Colombians amid the regional migration crisis, exacerbated by the armed conflict in Colombia, job search, and new Mexican government measures to curb migration to the U.S.
