Bodega de las Galerías Laietanas: universe of wine in the heart of the MNAC
In the Sala 71 of the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña (MNAC), a small gem of modern Catalan art centered around wine can be found. These are the paintings that once adorned the walls of the wine cellar of the famous Galerías Laietanes in Barcelona, created by artist Xavier Nogués in 1915. Commissioned by Santiago Segura, the artworks feature humorous figures related to wine and medieval sayings. The Galerías Laietanes was a cultural hub comparable to Los 4 Gatos for Modernism, hosting events like a dinner honoring Pablo Picasso. After Segura's death in 1918, the cellar became a storage space, and the paintings were later transferred to canvases to preserve them from humidity.
Researchers Discover Why Red Wine Sometimes Causes Headaches
Researchers at the University of California have potentially discovered why red wine causes headaches in some individuals, even with minimal consumption and no issues with other alcoholic beverages. Published in Scientific Reports, the study identifies quercetin, a compound in grapes affected by sun exposure, as a possible culprit. Quercetin, an antioxidant found in higher concentrations in quality wines from smaller, leafier plants, may interfere with alcohol metabolism. Previous theories, such as sulfite allergies or histamine levels, lacked conclusive evidence. The study also notes a higher intolerance to alcohol among East Asians due to a specific gene affecting the ALDH2 enzyme, which metabolizes alcohol. Quercetin appears to indirectly inhibit ALDH2, leading to the accumulation of acetaldehyde and associated symptoms, similar to the reaction observed in some East Asians.
Galeries Laietanes, a history of Barcelona during the Great War
Galeries Laietanes, owned by Santiago Segura, played a crucial role in Barcelona's art scene during World War I. The gallery, located on Gran Vía, was a modern art hub and hosted significant events, including a visit by Pablo Picasso. Joan Maria Minguet's new book, published by Vibop Edicions, explores the gallery's history, focusing on its unique wine cellar painted by Xavier Nogués. The book is part of the 'Envinats' collection, which highlights the cultural significance of wine. Minguet aims to present art history from a fresh perspective, moving away from traditional academic approaches.

Quim Vila, owner and director of Vila Viniteca, expressed his satisfaction with the recognition of sommeliers, who are crucial to the gastronomic experience in restaurants. The award will honor the sommelier who has most impressed the Michelin inspectors.
Grapes have beneficial effects on sight
Researchers from the National University of Singapore have found that grape consumption has beneficial effects on vision. Published in the 'Food & Function' journal, their study indicates that grapes, rich in antioxidants, can combat oxidative stress and associated visual impairments, particularly benefiting the elderly. The study involved 34 adults, half of whom consumed 46 grams of freeze-dried grape powder daily for 16 weeks, showing improved macular pigment optical density and reduced toxic compounds known as advanced glycation end-products (AGEs).
