Alberto Ponce De León is a journalist based in El Paso, United States of America.
Alberto Ponce de León V. (Chihuahua, 1976) is a Mexican writer, journalist, and screenwriter, also holding U.S. nationality. He served as a correspondent for Efe (news agency) in Washington, D.C., El Paso, and Dallas/Fort Worth, Tx. Since 2000, he has covered the Ciudad Juárez, Chih., Mexico/El Paso, Tx., U.S. border for various media outlets, including El Diario de El Paso/Juárez, Proceso magazine, Milenio Semanal, Newsweek en Español, Efe, and the Estrella Media network.
His journalistic pieces have been published in newspapers and magazines across several countries, primarily in the U.S., Mexico, and Spain. Two of his articles were included in books on political sociology and the militarization of Mexico (Editorial Planeta, 2010/2011). He has also contributed to IRE (Investigative Reporters & Editors) magazine, affiliated with the Missouri School of Journalism. Ponce de León has participated in the pre-production and editing of documentaries and television news programs in the U.S. for Discovery and History en Español, as well as for the Estrella TV network.
His novels La bicicleta de alquiler (2010) and El retrato de Pancho Villa (2016) explore the most violent years in Juárez, shaped by a lifestyle linked to drug trafficking and the so-called "war on drugs." En el azul del río (2022) follows a Guatemalan immigrant’s journey back to his hometown after spending half his life in the U.S. His book La boda de Octavio Reyes (Plaza y Valdés, 2002), a finalist for the Antonio Estrada State Novel Prize in Durango, Mexico, was the first to satirically depict a parallel world ruled by women.
His works have been cited in essays on contemporary Latin American literature and can be found in major libraries worldwide, including the national libraries of Mexico, France, and Spain; the Instituto Cervantes network; the U.S. Library of Congress; and the University of Abu Dhabi.
