Parliament and Supreme Court impasse unhealthy for Ghana's democracy
Alan Kyerematen, founder of the Movement for Change and independent presidential candidate, criticizes the ongoing impasse between Ghana's Supreme Court and Parliament, describing it as detrimental to the country's democracy. He argues that both institutions have mishandled the issue of vacant parliamentary seats, with the Supreme Court's actions deemed unconstitutional and Parliament's potential rejection of the court's ruling as a breach of law. Kyerematen emphasizes the importance of resolving this conflict before the upcoming general elections to ensure a peaceful democratic process.
There is so much inconsistency in parliament's vacant seats case
Kweku Paintsil, a private legal practitioner, criticizes the ongoing court case over vacant parliamentary seats, highlighting inconsistencies in the process. The Supreme Court recently denied Speaker Alban Bagbin's request to overturn a ruling on four vacant seats, a decision challenged by Effutu MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin. The seats in question are held by MPs from the NDC and NPP, representing various regions in Ghana. Paintsil argues that the inconsistencies suggest an agenda to create a hung parliament.
Vacant seat case: Speaker shouldn't have even been joined to suit
The Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, criticized the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, for engaging personal lawyers in a Supreme Court case concerning the status of four legislators. The AG argued that his office should represent public officeholders in such matters, as designated by the Constitution. The Supreme Court had previously stayed the Speaker's ruling to declare the MPs' seats vacant. The case, initially filed by MP Alexander Afenyo-Markin, challenges the Speaker's declaration. The Supreme Court adjourned the case to November 11, with Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo setting a deadline for the Speaker to file documents.
Vacant seats controversy: It's important to address the facts to benefit all
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo stresses the importance of addressing issues related to Speaker Alban Bagbin's ruling on vacant parliamentary seats for the benefit of the Ghanaian public. The discussion involves legal practitioners from the Attorney General's office and the Supreme Court, focusing on regulations governing Members of Parliament since 2021. The Chief Justice highlights the need for clarity and adherence to established procedures.
Gov't must act swiftly in Bawku conflict
Maxwell Ziyerley Agbambilla, representing Bawku Naaba, urges the Ghanaian government to promptly address the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict, which has recently resulted in 16 fatalities. He emphasizes the importance of resolving the issue to prevent further risk to lives. Security consultant Professor Kwesi Aning also condemns the violence and advocates for a collaborative approach to tackle the conflict.
Dam Spillage: Catholic Diocese of Jasikan donates to Keta-Akatsi Diocese
The Catholic Diocese of Jasikan in the Oti Region donated various relief items to flood-affected victims under the Keta-Akatsi Diocese. The donation, led by Father Joseph Nsiah, included food, clothes, and other essentials to support the victims. The Keta-Akatsi Diocese, represented by Msgr Peter Huletey, expressed gratitude for the support. Rev. Fr Lt. Col Winfred Sraha highlighted the significant damage caused by the spillage, particularly to educational and healthcare facilities, and mentioned ongoing efforts to restore these units by December 1.
How Illicit Financial Flows can slow realisation of SDGs in Ghana
Ghana faces significant challenges in socio-economic development due to illicit financial flows (IFFs), which result in substantial tax losses and hinder the realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The article highlights the impact of IFFs on various sectors, including health, education, and infrastructure, and emphasizes the need for better tax enforcement and international cooperation to combat these financial crimes. Key stakeholders, including the Ghana Revenue Authority and international organizations, call for improved governance and transparency to enhance domestic revenue mobilization and support developmental projects.
GIS impounds caravan with 'Kufuor gallons' of diesel
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at Akanu in the Volta region seized a caravan carrying about 150 'Kufuor gallons' of diesel, suspected to be stolen from Libya and smuggled into West Africa. The caravan, with a Nigerian registration, was intercepted early on Saturday by GIS officers. The smuggled diesel, cheaper than the national price, was transported through Togo into Ghana via unapproved routes. The GIS is intensifying patrols and calls for cooperation among security agencies to combat smuggling and protect the country's economy and security. The seized items will be handed over to the Customs Division.
German NGO and Ketu South Hospital restore lives of mentally challenged in Volta
The German NGO 'On The Move e.V.' in collaboration with Ketu South Municipal Hospital (KSMH) in Ghana's Volta region has successfully rehabilitated ten mentally challenged individuals since 2016. The NGO has been supporting healthcare projects in the Ketu South District for over six years and has partnered with KSMH since 2015. Together, they have conducted educational activities on brain awareness and established the 'Home of Brains' centre for psychiatric rehabilitation last year. The centre has provided social, emotional, and vocational training to patients. Although four patients could not complete the program, the ten who did are now working in their communities. A meeting with local religious and traditional leaders was held to discuss a holistic approach to mental health and to seek support for the initiative.
GIS collaborates with Customs Division to tighten security in Volta Region
The Volta Regional Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service, Peter Nantuo Esq, has initiated efforts to strengthen collaboration with other security agencies, including the Customs Division, to secure Ghana's borders in response to the threat of terrorism from neighboring countries like Burkina Faso. The commander and his team visited various border points, such as Nyive, to discuss strategies with both the Customs Exercise and Preventive Service and the Immigration Service. The focus is on preventing terrorist infiltration, tackling illegal activities, and fostering better relationships with border communities to gather intelligence and ensure national safety.
