Iraq says it killed prominent ISIS leader as group resurfaces
Iraqi forces killed a prominent ISIS leader, Samir Khader Sharif Shihan Al-Nimrawi, who was involved in transferring fighters, weapons, and explosives between Iraq and Syria. His death comes amid signs of ISIS's resurgence, with recent attacks including the killing of 11 truffle hunters in Syria. US intelligence estimates around 1,000 ISIS fighters in Iraq, with the group's capabilities reduced compared to the past. Security gaps persist between federal Iraq and the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. The US, maintaining 2,500 personnel in Iraq, is in talks with Iraq to potentially end the anti-ISIS coalition's mission, prompted by retaliatory strikes on Iran-backed militias.

This incident marks the first attack by AQAP since the death of its leader, Khalid Batarfi, and comes amid increased targeting of the Southern Transitional Council forces, which are supported by the United Arab Emirates and aligned with the Saudi-backed Yemeni government against the Iran-backed Houthis. The Southern Armed Forces have been actively pursuing al-Qaeda fighters in the region.
US charges Colombian-Lebanese Hezbollah member in Argentina bombing
US federal prosecutors charged a Lebanese-Colombian citizen, Samuel Salman El Reda, with terrorism for his alleged involvement with Hezbollah in the 1994 bombing of the Argentine Israeli Mutual Association in Buenos Aires, which resulted in 85 deaths and hundreds of injuries. Reda is accused of joining Hezbollah in 1993 and collaborating with Iranian diplomat Mohsen Rabbani and Lebanese operative Assad Ahmad Barakat to plan and execute the attack. Both Hezbollah and Iran have historically denied involvement in the bombing.
Explainer: Why Bahrain supported US strikes on Yemen’s Houthis
Bahrain was the only Arab nation to support the US and UK military strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen, aligning with the United States amid regional tensions. The strikes were a response to the Houthis' attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea, which have been linked to the conflict in Gaza and have negatively affected global shipping. The White House acknowledged support from Bahrain, Canada, the Netherlands, and Australia, but details of the support were not disclosed, and Bahrain's government has not commented.

The Iraqi Federal Supreme Court terminated the membership of parliament speaker Mohammed al-Halbusi and parliament member Laith Al-Dulaimi, leading to several resignations from Halbusi's allies in the government. The decision was related to an unspecified case against Halbusi, with reports that Dulaimi had accused Halbusi of forging his signature on a resignation letter.
Israel launches strikes in Syria, Lebanon, targets 'Hezbollah infrastructure'
The Israeli military conducted airstrikes on Syrian military infrastructure and Hezbollah targets in Lebanon in response to attacks on Israeli territory. The strikes, which typically go unconfirmed by the IDF, were reported by Syria's SANA and the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. An Israeli strike on Dec. 25 killed IRGC commander Sayyed Razi Mousavi, and another strike reportedly killed 11 IRGC members, though this was denied by IRGC spokesperson Ramezan Sharif. Iran and Hezbollah have increased their military presence in Syria since the civil war began, supporting President Bashar al-Assad's government.
