Vontasha Simms spoke to the Maryland General Assembly, urging the House of Delegates Health and Government Operations Committee to consider a bill which would form a workgroup to consider allowing a close family member or friend to take a supervisory role of an adult suffering a mental health crisis, as well as their dependent children. Simms' 3-year-old grandson was found dead of dehydration and exposure in a playground, being pushed on a swing by his mother for 40 hours, according to authorities.

Matthew Jones served two tours of duty in Afghanistan, one as a dog handler. In March 2011, he took over as the handler of Gus, a Labrador retriever trained to sniff out Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). In the year they served together, Jones said Gus found 14 IEDs and saved dozens of Marine lives. So, after leaving the Marine Corps, Jones adopted Gus, when the only other option was for Gus to be euthanized. Jones helped Gus learn to be a civilian dog, and Gus helped Jones deal with the post traumatic stress he faced as a family counselor at a funeral hime.
